At the invitation of the school of finance and economics, capital university of economics and business, Chen hao, associate researcher of our institute, made a paper entitled "will urban exports reduce the" migrant income premium "on May 22. Dozens of teachers and students from the school of finance and economics of capital university of economics and business attended the lecture.
The "migrant income premium" is the phenomenon that the income of migrant labor is higher than that of local labor. Whether the improvement of the level of urban opening to the outside world is conducive to reducing the income premium of immigrants has always been the focus of academic circles and the government. From the perspective of export trade, this paper investigates the change of the income gap between the migrant and the local registered labor in the city. The regression results of two sets of instrumental variables, namely, the native place of official students in the late qing dynasty and the open treaty port cities in the late qing dynasty, show that the growth of urban export scale significantly reduces the income premium of immigrants, and the reduction of the income gap between migrant and local registered labor in urban export mainly depends on the screening effect and spillover effect of exports. Further studies have proved that the role of exports does not change with the length of time local registered labor has been registered. That is to say, the opening up of cities to the outside world can improve the income level of all local registered labor, thus comprehensively reducing the income premium of immigrants. According to the research of this paper, insisting on opening to the outside world is conducive to the realization of income equality among the labor force with different registered permanent residence in the city. Therefore, local labor force should support the city's opening to the outside world, so as to fully enjoy the spilt benefits brought by export to the local labor force's income.
